Exam week is the wrong time to negotiate with yourself every time Reddit, YouTube, Discord, or a game launcher calls. A useful study blocker should make the decision once, then apply it automatically while keeping your library portal, course platform, cloud documents, and research sources available.
This guide turns that idea into a practical Mac setup: one normal study profile, one stricter exam profile, recurring blocks, and a short list of approved tools.
Quick setup: Create a Study profile for ordinary revision and an Exam profile for high-stakes sessions. Schedule the first; use a locked or allow-only session for the second. DeepZone Free covers website blocking, two profiles, basic schedules, domain exceptions, and Quick Focus up to two hours. DeepZone Pro is required for app blocking, unlimited profiles, Lock Mode, and whitelist mode.
Source note: Product and platform facts were checked July 21, 2026 against DeepZone’s official homepage and privacy policy plus Apple’s current Mac Focus documentation. Promotional pricing is intentionally omitted because it can change quickly.

The Exam-Week Plan
The goal is not to block the whole internet for seven days. It is to match friction to the task. Light revision needs repeatable boundaries; a timed practice paper deserves stronger enforcement.
| Day | Primary block | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Mon–Thu | Study profile on a recurring schedule | Make normal revision automatic. |
| Friday | Shorter scheduled blocks | Review weak topics without exhausting attention. |
| Practice exam | Exam profile with stronger lock | Rehearse the real no-distraction environment. |
| Evening before | Light block, fixed end time | Protect sleep instead of extending revision indefinitely. |
Build Two Profiles, Not One Giant Blocklist
Study Everyday
- Block social feeds, entertainment, shopping, news, and the sites you visit reflexively.
- Keep course platforms, library databases, citation tools, cloud documents, and necessary video lectures available.
- Run on a recurring weekday schedule so revision starts without another decision.
Exam Strict
- Block every nonessential website and distracting native app.
- Use whitelist mode when the task needs only a few approved destinations.
- Use Lock Mode only after testing the rules in an unlocked session.
Strictness is useful only when the blocklist is correct. Test first, lock second.Exam-week setup rule
Keep Study Resources Open
Before turning on a strict session, write down what the next task genuinely requires. Avoid vague exceptions such as “the internet.” Approve the smallest useful set.
| Task | Allow | Block |
|---|---|---|
| Read lecture notes | Course portal, PDF reader, cloud drive | Social, news, shopping |
| Research essay | Library, journals, citations, writing app | General search only if needed |
| Watch a lecture | Required lecture destination | Short-form and recommendation loops |
| Practice exam | Question PDF and answer document | Everything else |
Privacy note: DeepZone’s official privacy policy says profiles, schedules, blocked website/app lists, keywords, exceptions, and session history stay on the Mac. License validation and anonymous TelemetryDeck signals are the disclosed network-related exceptions.
Schedule the Week Before It Gets Busy
- Choose fixed study windows. Start with the hours already protected in your calendar.
- Add recurring Study blocks. DeepZone officially supports recurring schedules per profile.
- Keep short breaks outside the block. Decide in advance whether social feeds belong in breaks; for many students, they make restarting harder.
- Create separate Exam sessions. Use Quick Focus for ad hoc work or a stricter Pro mode for timed practice.
- Pair it with Apple Focus. Apple’s Study Focus can silence or allow selected notifications and run on a schedule. It complements a blocker; it does not replace website blocking.
Choose the Right Enforcement Level
| Method | Websites | Apps | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Study Focus | No website block | Silences selected notifications | Reduce alerts and signal availability. |
| DeepZone Free | System-level website blocking | Not included | Scheduled study with two profiles. |
| DeepZone Pro | Sites, whitelist, keywords | App blocking | Strict exam sessions and more profiles. |
Do not overclaim “unbreakable.” DeepZone describes Lock Mode as password-protected and timer-based. Treat it as a strong commitment layer, not a guarantee against someone with administrator access and unlimited time.
Exam-Day Checklist
- Download every PDF, slide deck, and permitted reference you may need.
- Open required apps and test every approved domain before locking the session.
- Silence notifications with a macOS Study or Do Not Disturb Focus.
- Close chat clients and game launchers; Pro users can add distracting apps to the Exam profile.
- Set a session length that matches the paper, including reading time.
- Keep one offline note for issues to investigate after the timer ends.
Verdict: automate ordinary study, reserve strict locks for exam conditions.
A good student blocker does not make research impossible. It makes the intended path easier to stay on. Start with DeepZone Free if two website-blocking profiles and basic schedules cover your needs. Pro becomes relevant when native apps are the distraction, you need allow-only browsing, or you want password-and-timer enforcement for serious sessions.
Whichever tier you use, build and test the rules before the pressure peaks. The best exam-week setup is the one that has already survived a practice run.
